SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
House Bill 137 appropriates $25 thousand from the general fund to Public Education Department
for supporting the New Mexico Supercomputing challenge in high schools and middle schools.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $25 thousand contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general
fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year shall revert
to the general fund.
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
PED reports that the NM Supercomputing Challenge provides a learning experience for teams of
pre-college students in scientific inquiry, project management, computational analysis and
presentation skills. The Supercomputing Challenge is a year-long statewide competition for
prizes and scholarships. Each team of up to five students and a sponsoring teacher defines and
works on a single computational project of its own choosing. The goal by 2012 is to have at

least one student team compete from each mid-school and high school in the state and at least
one teacher/sponsor with the necessary skills to support student teams.
OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES
The NM Supercomputing Challenge received $75.0 funding for FY 2008 from the summer
reading, math and science institutes. These institutes are included in the General Appropriations
Act.
