AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO THE BOARD OF REGENTS OF NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS UNIVERSITY FOR RECRUITING AND TRAINING RURAL AND UNDERSERVED UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FROM NEW MEXICO'S SMALLER UNIVERSITIES TO ENTER MEDICAL SCHOOL.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--Two hundred fifty thousand dollars ($250,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the board of regents of New Mexico highlands university for expenditure in fiscal year 2009 to establish a demonstration and research program that will better prepare undergraduate students from smaller universities for successful entry into medical school or other related health fields. Preparation will include a focused undergraduate curriculum, summer science academies, remote learning, medical school entrance examination preparation and mentoring by rural physicians and physicians associated with the New Mexico Hispanic medical association. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2009 shall revert to the general fund.
