A MEMORIAL
REMEMBERING FORMER FIRST LADY OF NEW MEXICO DEE JOHNSON.
WHEREAS, former first lady of New Mexico Dee Johnson died shortly before Christmas in 2006 at her northern New Mexico home; and
WHEREAS, while Dee Johnson was active and successful as a business owner, community volunteer and activist for worthy causes, before, during and after her tenure as first lady, her first priority was always the well-being and education of her children, Seah and Erik; and
WHEREAS, as first lady of New Mexico, Dee Johnson preferred to work quietly outside the glare of the public spotlight, but nevertheless lent her name, prestige and energy to numerous causes, including the celebrity art auction to benefit the American diabetes association; construction of an adobe home for habitat for humanity with other first ladies from around the country; the eventual complete prohibition of smoking in the state capitol; and statewide efforts to improve women's health; and
WHEREAS, Dee Johnson remained grounded and true to her roots as an ordinary New Mexican while always striving to make an extraordinary difference in the lives of her children, her husband, her neighbors and her fellow New Mexicans; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico and its residents owe Dee Johnson a debt of gratitude for the everlasting mark she has left on the state;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that former first lady of New Mexico Dee Johnson be remembered as an outstanding New Mexican and a wonderful mother.
