A JOINT MEMORIAL
RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF THE FOUNDING OF LA VILLA REAL DE
LA SANTA FÉ DE SAN FRANCISCO DE ASÍS, 1607-1610, AND THE PART
THAT THE PALACE OF THE GOVERNORS AND THE SANTA FE PLAZA PLAYED
IN THE CITY'S FOUNDING.
WHEREAS, by 1600, the Pueblo people of the Rio Grande
region had inhabited the area now known as Santa Fe for
hundreds of years; and
WHEREAS, from at least the time of 1607 there existed a
small settlement of Spanish people in that same area; and
WHEREAS, by the summer of 1610 Pedro de Peralta had
established the city of Santa Fe; and
WHEREAS, the founding of Santa Fe is a seminal event in
the history of the United States; and
WHEREAS, the palace of the governors and the Santa Fe

plaza have existed from the time of the city of Santa Fe's
founding and continue to be the active, vibrant heart of the
city; and
WHEREAS, the United States senate and house of
representatives have within their power the ability to
recommend to the United Nations Educational, Cultural and
Scientific Organization (UNESCO) locations and structures for
inclusion in the United Nations' listing of world heritage
sites; and
WHEREAS, the city of Santa Fe wishes to have the Santa Fe
plaza and the palace of the governors, taken together, listed
as a UNESCO world heritage site;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
STATE OF NEW MEXICO that New Mexico's congressional delegation
be requested to seek UNESCO world heritage site designation for
the palace of the governors and the Santa Fe plaza; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
transmitted to the governing body of the city of Santa Fe and
New Mexico's United States congressional delegation.
