A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE NEW MEXICO LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL TO DIRECT THE

APPROPRIATE COMMITTEE TO STUDY THE POTENTIAL FOR EXEMPTING LOW-

INCOME NEW MEXICANS FROM PROPERTY TAXATION.

WHEREAS, senior citizens and low-income property owners

who are on fixed incomes are subject to hardship from

increasing valuations of their property; and

WHEREAS, many inequities exist between substantially

identical properties within and across counties; and

WHEREAS, nonprofit organizations are subject to property

taxes, even as their main purpose is to provide services and

resources for their communities;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE

STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the New Mexico legislative council be

requested to direct the appropriate committee to study the

potential for property tax relief for low-income citizens and

nonprofit organizations; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be

transmitted to the New Mexico legislative council.
