SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Memorial 74 requests the declaration of March 9, 2007 as “Las Vegas, New Mexico
Day" at the Senate.
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
Senate Memorial 74 states that:
•
Las Vegas, New Mexico, was established in 1835 on the Santa Fe Trail after a group of
settlers received a land grant from the Mexican government; and
•
The railroad arrived in 1880 when it set up a maintenance and provisioning depot east of
the old town and a "new town" was established;
•
Las Vegas was one of the largest cities in the southwest and host to its own opera house,
a college, a Harvey House Hotel and a Carnegie Library;
•
Las Vegas hosted a reunion of Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders, the earliest recorded ro-
deo and many western characters and events; and
•
Las Vegas is a city rich with history and tradition.
