SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Memorial 29 requires that the United States departments of defense and energy be
requested to dismantle and remove from Albuquerque the weapons of mass destruction stored at
Kirtland Air Force Base.
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
The Office of Military Base Planning asked Kirtland Air Force Base (AFB) for comment
regarding the Senate Memorial. The response was that the Air Force can neither confirm nor
deny any fact regarding nuclear munitions, storage, capability, etc. The Office of Military Base
Planning states it is common knowledge that Kirtland AFB played a key role in special weapons
research and development, and at one time the Air Force Special Weapons Center was located at
Kirtland. Currently, the Air Force units at Kirtland AFB conduct nuclear surety inspections to
ensure that potential missions can be supported in a safe and secure manner. The focus is on
maintaining the capability to support mission which can be tasked by the National Command
Authority.
