SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Memorial 22 remembers former First Lady of New Mexico Dee Johnson.
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
Former First Lady of New Mexico Dee Johnson died shortly before Christmas in 2006 at her
Northern New Mexico home. While Dee Johnson was active and successful as a business owner,
community volunteer and activist for worthy causes, before, during and after her tenure as first
lady, her first priority was always the well-being and education of her children, Seah and Erik.
As First Lady of New Mexico, Dee Johnson preferred to work quietly outside the glare of the
public spotlight, but nevertheless lent her name, prestige and energy to numerous causes, includ-
ing the celebrity art auction to benefit the American Diabetes Association, construction of an
adobe home for Habitat for Humanity with other first ladies from around the country, the even-
tual complete prohibition of smoking in the state capitol and statewide efforts to improve
women's health.
Dee Johnson remained grounded and true to her roots as an ordinary New Mexican while always
striving to make an extraordinary difference in the lives of her children, her husband, her
neighbors and her fellow New Mexicans.
