Synopsis of Bill

Senate Joint Memorial 69 recognizes the importance of the founding of La Villa Real de la Santa

Fe de San Francisco de Asis, 1607-1610, and the part that the Palace of the Governors and the

Santa Fe Plaza played in the city’s founding.

SIGNIFICANT ISSUES

Senate Joint Memorial 69 states that by 1600, the Pueblo people of the Rio Grande region had

inhabited the area now known as Santa Fe for hundreds of years and from at least the time of

1607 there existed a small settlement of Spanish people in that same area. By the summer of

1610 Pedro de Peralta had established the city of Santa Fe and the founding of Santa Fe is a

seminal event in the history of the United States, The Palace of the Governors and the Santa Fe

Plaza have existed from the time of the city of Santa Fe’s founding and continue to be the active,

vibrant heart of the city. The United States Senate and House of Representatives have within

their power the ability to recommend to the United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific

Organization (UNESCO) locations and structures for inclusion in the United Nations’ listing of

world heritage sites. The city of Santa Fe wishes to have the Santa Fe Plaza and the Palace of the

Governors, taken together, listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.

The Legislature of the State of New Mexico requests that New Mexico’s Congressional

Delegation seek UNESCO world heritage site designation for the Palace of the Governors and

the Santa Fe Plaza.
