SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Joint Memorial 17 requests that February 12, 2007, be proclaimed as “New
Mexico Mesa Day," at the New Mexico State Legislature.
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
The New Mexico MESA, Inc. is a non-profit organization that was created as part of a
national initiative to better prepare minority students, who have been historically
underrepresented, for college. It began in 1982 at only 7 schools, but today it is present
at 110 schools statewide. The MESA program provides middle and high school students
tutoring and pre-college counseling and guidance. The program also provides students
with the tools necessary for college majors in mathematics, engineering, and the sciences.
In addition to helping students, it also provides support to teachers, parents, and the
community.
Proclaiming February 12, 2007 as “MESA Day at the Legislature," would recognize the
importance of the MESA program in New Mexico.
