Senate Joint Memorial 5 requests the Governor to proclaim October 12 through the 14, 2007 as

“Cowboys for Cancer Research Days" at the New Mexico State Legislature.

SIGNIFICANT ISSUES

Cowboys for Cancer Research is an all-volunteer group that was formed twenty-five years ago to

raise funds to help seed new research studies and equipment at the University of New Mexico

Cancer Research and Development Center that benefits cancer patients directly by providing

promising new treatments. The University of New Mexico hosts the largest cancer treatment fa-

cility in New Mexico, treating over three thousand newly diagnosed adult and pediatric cancer

patients each year. Cowboys for Cancer Research is their largest single contributor with one

hundred percent of all money staying in New Mexico. Cowboys for Cancer Research has con-

tributed over six hundred thousand dollars ($600,000) since its inception, with one hundred forty

thousand dollars ($140,000) of this amount donated in 2006. All money contributed is deposited

in the Cowboys for Cancer Research Alma Cohorn memorial endowment fund at the University

of New Mexico.

“Cowboys for Cancer Research Days" will symbolize the importance of this program and recog-

nize its accomplishments.
