Synopsis of Bill
The House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee Substitute for House Bill 1348 appropriates $75
thousand from the general fund to Cultural Affairs department to develop educational programs and a
symposium for the Bosque Redondo memorial at Fort Sumner.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $75 thousand contained in the HCPAC substitute for House Bill 1348 is a recurring
expense to the General Fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FY08
shall revert to the General Fund.
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
The Bosque Redondo represents the location of a significant historical event occurring during the
territorial era of New Mexico. The Memorial to the Navajo and Mescalero Apache internment at Fort
Sumner State Monument was dedicated on June 4, 2005. The project was appropriated a preliminary
$450 thousand for construction and planning, design and improvements at the memorial and park at Fort
Stanton in House Bill 622 during the 2006 legislative session.
The HCPAC Substitute for 1348 will provide $75 thousand to develop a symposium and programs
focusing on the long walk; as well as the internment of the Navajo and Mescalero Apaches at the Bosque
Redondo reservation in the 1860’s.
