SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
House Bill 1168 appropriates $150 thousand from the general fund to the Public Education
Department for teacher training and materials for after-schools programs in the Los Lunas public
school district.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $150 thousand contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general
fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2008 shall
revert to the general fund.
The LFC remains concerned with funding initiatives outside of the funding formula as it tends to
disequalize school funding and diverts funding away from core educational needs.

SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
These funds will be used to support teacher training that the district has been developing in order
to better prepare them to meet the needs of students in a standards-based system. These funds
would support that initiative and also assist the district in providing support for ensuring that all
students have highly qualified teachers.
These funds would also be used to expand the district’s ability to offer before- and after-school
programs. Current programs reflect tutoring in math and reading, technology and library
activities.
