SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

House Bill 724, State Historian Service Learning Internship appropriates $100 thousand from the

GENERAL FUND to the State Commission of Public Records for the purpose of the Office of

the State Historian’s service learning student internship program.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The appropriation of $100 thousand contained in this bill is a RECURRING expense to the

GENERAL FUND. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FISCAL

YEAR 2008 shall revert to the GENERAL FUND.

SIGNIFICANT ISSUES

The funding for this bill supports the State Historian’s service learning and student internship

program and is designed to be collaboration between the College of Santa Fe and the State

Historian. Students from the College of Santa Fe will work on public history projects for the

state. The work that the students do may include: connecting with the current digital history

project of the State Historian’s office, compiling audio, video, and text-based documents, oral

histories and assisting with public lectures, all of which hope to provide meaningful connections

to the intern’s understanding and knowledge of New Mexico history.

If funded, this program will provide support and opportunities for students to assist in the

collection and documentation of public (New Mexico) history. In addition, this will result in

expanded access of information for all New Mexicans.
