SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
House Bill 60 adds the secretary of the Public Education Department (PED) to the New Mexico
Sentencing Commission (NMSC).
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
NFI. This bill has no fiscal impact on the general fund.
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
Juvenile justice and education are interrelated.
Truancy has become a major problem that negatively influences the future of our youth and costs
taxpayers thousands of dollars. Truancy is among the major problems facing our schools.
Schools interact with local and statewide juvenile justice agencies.
The PED Secretary will provide the NMSC with insight into education policy and issues. The

NMSC can give the PED Secretary information on the prevention of crime and assist educators
in their interaction with the justice system.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
The NMSC conducts and staffs over 50 commission and committee meetings per year. The ad-
dition of the PED Secretary will not alter the workload of the staff
