AN ACT
RELATING TO HIGHER EDUCATION; CREATING THE COLLEGE ASSISTANCE
MIGRANT PROGRAM AT NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
Section 1. COLLEGE ASSISTANCE MIGRANT PROGRAM.--
A. The "college assistance migrant program" is
created at New Mexico state university to serve educational
needs of migrants and seasonal farm workers who are students
at the university by offering sufficient support to ensure
participants' success in the first year of college and by
maintaining communication with former participants to ensure
they receive the support they need to graduate.
B. The program shall:
(1) address the achievement gap of farm
worker students in higher education and bridge educational
outreach issues within that population;
(2) assist each student to graduate from New
Mexico state university with a bachelor's degree;
(3) provide students with assistance with
housing and meal costs, comprehensive health examinations,
art and cultural activities, tutoring and mentoring services,
leadership training workshops and school supplies; and
(4) provide overall educational support and
communication with family, community members and university
