A MEMORIAL
DECLARING MARCH 9, 2007 "LAS VEGAS, NEW MEXICO DAY" AT THE
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
WHEREAS, Las Vegas, New Mexico, was established in 1835
on the Santa Fe trail after a group of settlers received a
land grant from the Mexican government; and
WHEREAS, the railroad arrived in 1880 when it set up a
maintenance and provisioning depot east of the old town and a
"new town" was established; and
WHEREAS, Las Vegas was one of the largest cities in the
southwest and host to its own opera house, a college, a Harvey
House hotel and a Carnegie library; and
WHEREAS, Las Vegas hosted a reunion of Teddy Roosevelt's
rough riders, the earliest recorded rodeo and many colorful
western characters and events; and
WHEREAS, Las Vegas is a city rich with history and
tradition;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that March 9, 2007
be declared "Las Vegas, New Mexico Day" at the house of
representatives.
