A JOINT MEMORIAL
SUPPORTING SUNLAND PARK'S EFFORTS TO HAVE THE FEDERAL
GOVERNMENT ESTABLISH A VEHICLE AND PEDESTRIAN, NONCOMMERCIAL
CUSTOMS PORT OF ENTRY AT THE INTERNATIONAL BORDER BETWEEN
CIUDAD JUAREZ-ANAPRA, MEXICO, AND SUNLAND PARK, NEW MEXICO.
WHEREAS, Sunland Park is located at the southernmost
part of Dona Ana county, along the international border with
the Republic of Mexico; and
WHEREAS, Sunland Park has had a federal cattle crossing
designation since 1978 and is now preparing necessary
documents for consideration by the United States government to
establish a vehicle and pedestrian, noncommercial customs port
of entry in the immediate proximity of the cattle crossing;
and
WHEREAS, the establishment of a noncommercial
international border crossing at Sunland Park is part of an
overall regional master plan strategy and would dramatically
open the paseo del norte border region to binational economic
and cultural opportunities and activities; and
WHEREAS, recent studies have indicated that a border
crossing located at Sunland Park would significantly reduce
vehicular congestion and the associated air pollution now
affecting the New Mexico-Texas-Chihuahua region caused by the
international ports of entry in nearby El Paso, Texas; and
