AN ACT
MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR A MATHEMATICS CAREER INITIATIVE IN SOUTHEASTERN NEW MEXICO SCHOOL DISTRICTS.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--Three hundred thousand dollars ($300,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the public education department for expenditure in fiscal year 2008 for Dexter consolidated schools, Lake Arthur and Hagerman municipal schools, Hondo Valley and Artesia public schools and Roswell independent schools to encourage students to choose mathematics as a career. The schools shall contract with talented mathematicians that make mathematic lessons come alive through active participation for students in elementary and middle schools. The lessons shall be designed to provide practical strategies that enable students to improve their memory, mental capacity and flexibility in solving mathematical problems. The lessons shall be designed to increase computational speed and fluency by offering students strategies and insights into the complex world of mathematics through relational patterns and mental exercises. The mathematicians shall also provide workshops for teachers to assist them in improving their instructional practices that develop passion and enthusiasm for mathematics in order to encourage students to learn what it means to become competent mathematics learners. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2008 shall revert to the general fund.
