AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR A PARENT INVOLVEMENT AND SCHOOL READINESS PILOT PROGRAM; DECLARING AN EMERGENCY.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--Five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the public education department for expenditure in fiscal years 2007 and 2008 to fund a parent involvement and school readiness pilot program for families of children from birth to age three. The program is intended to teach parents to be active in their children's early education to prepare them for success in school and life, focusing on academics and aiming to stem problems such as child abuse and teen pregnancy. The program is also intended to emphasize adult literacy education and community resource awareness to help parents and families become economically self-sufficient. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2008 shall revert to the general fund.

     Section 2. EMERGENCY.--It is necessary for the public peace, health and safety that this act take effect immediately.
