    Your EDUCATION COMMITTEE, to whom has been referred

HOUSE BILL 584

has had it under consideration and reports same with recommendation that it DO PASS, amended as follows:

     1. On page 1, line 17, after the semicolon insert "INCREASING REQUIRED MINIMUM INSTRUCTIONAL AREAS IN FIRST THROUGH THIRD AND EIGHTH GRADES;".

     2. On page 8, line 7, after "student" strike the remainder of the line, strike lines 8 and 9 and strike line 10 up to the period.

     3. On page 11, line 6, strike "A" and insert in lieu thereof "Except as otherwise provided, a".

     4. On page 11, line 10, after the period insert "A parent may give written, signed permission for the school-age person to leave school in case of hardship approved by the local superintendent.".

     5. On page 12, line 22, after "in" insert "science, social studies,".

     6. On page 17, line 23, after "year" strike the remainder of the line, strike lines 24 and 25 and strike page 18, line 1 up to the period.

     7. On page 18, line 7, after the comma strike the remainder of the line, strike line 8 and insert in lieu thereof "of which one shall be the equivalent to or higher than the level of algebra 2, unless the parent submitted written, signed permission for the student to complete a lesser mathematics unit;".

     8. On page 18, lines 15 and 16, strike Paragraph (5) in its entirety.

     9. Renumber the succeeding paragraphs accordingly.

     10. On page 18, line 18, after "in" strike the remainder of the line, strike line 19 in its entirety and strike line 20 through "include" and insert in lieu thereof "one of the following: a career cluster course, workplace readiness or".

     11. On page 18, line 21, strike "five" and insert in lieu thereof "seven".

     12. On page 19, line 17, strike "high school diploma" and insert in lieu thereof "New Mexico diploma of excellence".

     13. On page 20, line 6, strike "high school diploma" and insert in lieu thereof "New Mexico diploma of excellence".

     14. On page 21, line 9, before the period insert "--DUAL CREDIT COURSES--LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH".

     15. On page 21, line 9, before "Beginning" insert the subsection designation "A.".

     16. On page 21, line 12, after the period insert the subsection designation "B.".

     17. On page 21, line 15, strike the end quotation marks and between lines 15 and 16, insert the following new subsection:

          "C. Beginning with the 2009-2010 school year, each school district shall offer at least two years of a language other than English in each high school."".,

and thence referred to the APPROPRIATIONS AND FINANCE COMMITTEE.
