A MEMORIAL
COMMENDING THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE AND BERNALILLO COUNTY FOR HONORING THE LIFE AND WORK OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was one of the nation's most important civil rights leaders; and
WHEREAS, his commitment to the principles of nonviolent protest and peaceful civil disobedience contrasted sharply with the violence encountered by civil rights activists; and
WHEREAS, his leadership and accomplishments led the United States congress to honor him by designating the third Monday in January as a national holiday;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the city of Albuquerque and Bernalillo county be commended for publicly honoring the birthday of this historic leader; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the mayor of Albuquerque and the president of the Bernalillo county commission.
