SENATE MEMORIAL 47
47th legislature - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - second session, 2006
INTRODUCED BY
Michael S. Sanchez
A MEMORIAL
REQUESTING THE PROPERTY CONTROL DIVISION OF THE GENERAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT TO STUDY RELOCATING THE NEW MEXICO STATE FAIR TO VALENCIA COUNTY.
WHEREAS, the New Mexico state fair is an annual event celebrated by all residents of New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, traditionally state fairs throughout the country have focused on the rural and agricultural heritage of that state; and
WHEREAS, while in close proximity to the state's major urban center, Valencia county retains and reflects the rural and agricultural traditions so important to New Mexicans; and
WHEREAS, the current location of the New Mexico state fair has served all aspects of the fair admirably but with the continued growth of Albuquerque the location has become increasingly congested and difficult to access; and
WHEREAS, it is recognized that increasing urban growth may bring increased security risks for attendees of the New Mexico state fair and residents in the surrounding areas; and
WHEREAS, the current New Mexico state fair location is within a contained area of Albuquerque that limits parking and impacts state fair attendees, customers of local business establishments and residents living in the local neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, state and local funds and resources that are required to address issues such as parking, security and transportation may result in other statewide projects going unfunded or underfunded; and
WHEREAS, Albuquerque has burgeoning economic development while Valencia county could benefit from the economic activity the state fair represents;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the property control division of the general services department be requested to work in conjunction with the state fair commission to study the feasibility of relocating the New Mexico state fair to Valencia county; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the property control division of the general services department be requested to present its findings to the appropriate legislative interim committee no later than October 1, 2006; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the property control division of the general services department, the general services department and the state fair commission.
