A MEMORIAL

DIRECTING AN INTERIM LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE TO STUDY THE PROBLEM OF IDENTITY THEFT AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS.

 

     WHEREAS, identity theft is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the nation and poses a serious threat to every New Mexican; and

     WHEREAS, identity theft can destroy a person's credit, reputation and financial well-being; and

     WHEREAS, in one recent twelve-month period, over seven million Americans were victims of identity theft; and

     WHEREAS, even persons who are careful about using their credit cards and bank accounts are vulnerable to this ultimate invasion of privacy; and

     WHEREAS, identity theft is a crime that can take years to remedy;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the appropriate interim legislative committee be requested to hold a meeting on the problem of identity theft, listen to testimony from interested parties and organizations and recommend legislation for protecting New Mexicans and addressing issues relating to identity theft.
