A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF COMBATING NOXIOUS WEED INFESTATIONS THROUGHOUT THE STATE.

     WHEREAS, the land, water and other natural resources of New Mexico are being severely impacted by invasions of noxious weeds; and

     WHEREAS, the noxious weeds compete with forage grasses and other plant species important to the economic viability of range livestock production and wildlife management in New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, landowners and users expend ever increasing resources to control noxious weeds; and

     WHEREAS, prevention, early detection, rapid response and early eradication are the most effective and least costly strategies against noxious weeds because they combat new invasions before they expand beyond feasible control; and

     WHEREAS, New Mexico has a voluntary weed-free hay program; and

     WHEREAS, best practices to prevent and control the rapid spread of noxious weeds are well-established by New Mexico state university and the New Mexico department of agriculture; and

     WHEREAS, the introduction and spread of noxious weeds often come from outside the agricultural community;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the state be encouraged to take action to reverse the trend of increasing invasions, combat noxious weed infestations throughout the state and prevent the introduction of new weeds; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the New Mexico department of agriculture and New Mexico state university.
