SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 331 appropriates $100 thousand from the general fund to the Tourism Department to
sponsor and support the USS New Mexico at milestone ceremonies during construction and
commissioning.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $100 thousand contained in this bill is a non-recurring expense to the gen-
eral fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2007
shall revert to the general fund.
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
The USS New Mexico Committee, chaired by Dick Brown, indicates the submarine is only 18%
complete and will require several more years of construction before joining the Navy’s fleet.
The USS New Mexico, a Virginia-class submarine, is scheduled for delivery in 2010. It is the

second ship in the Navy’s fleet to carry the state’s name. The first USS New Mexico was the
flagship of the Pacific fleet in World War II.
PERFORMANCE IMPLICATIONS
According to the Tourism Department, increased tourism promotion at these milestone ceremo-
nies may result in increased visitation to the state, a key performance measure for the depart-
ment.
COMPANIONSHIP
Senate Bill 331 duplicates House Bill 407.
