SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 56 creates a new Science and Mathematics Division within the Public Education De-
partment. The bill appropriates $424 thousand from the general fund to the Public Education
Department to establish the division.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $424 thousand contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general
fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2007 shall
revert to the general fund.
PERFORMANCE IMPLICATIONS
The creation of a division of science and mathematics will assist the department meet the public
school support performance measure of regarding the percent of elementary and middle school

students achieving the No Child Left Behind Act annual measurable objective for proficiency or
above on standards-based assessments.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
The anticipated responsibilities of this division are already being supported within the Instruc-
tional Support and Vocational Education Division. Creation of this division may duplicate ef-
forts already in place.
