HONORING THE MILLICENT ROGERS MUSEUM ON ITS FIFTIETH
ANNIVERSARY.
WHEREAS, Millicent Rogers was the granddaughter of Henry
Huttleston Rogers, one of the original founders of Standard
oil; and
WHEREAS, she moved to Taos, New Mexico, in 1947 where
she assembled a stellar collection of Native American jewelry
and textiles; and
WHEREAS, when she passed away in 1953, she left behind a
collection of items worthy of a premier museum; and
WHEREAS, her son, Paul Peralta-Ramos, envisioned a place
where his mother's collection could be displayed and in 1953,
together with other family members, created a foundation to
preserve Millicent Rogers' collection; and
WHEREAS, the Millicent Rogers museum first opened its
doors in 1956 and moved to its present location in 1960 as the
museum's collection grew through donations and purchases; and
WHEREAS, over the last fifty years, the museum has
continued Millicent Rogers' tradition of collecting important
pieces of Native American and Spanish colonial art; and
WHEREAS, today, the museum's collections include Navajo
and pueblo jewelry, Navajo and pueblo textiles, pueblo
pottery, Hopi and Zuni kachina dolls, southwestern basketry,
