A MEMORIAL
DECLARING FEBRUARY 7, 2006 HERMANITAS DAY AT THE HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES.
WHEREAS, Mana de Albuquerque, a national Latina
organization, is dedicated to the empowerment and advancement
of Hispanas/Latinas in our community; and
WHEREAS, it is an organization of women who advocate
Hispana leadership and fairness and equality in education,
housing, health care, employment, human rights and cultural
issues for all, especially as they relate to Latinas
everywhere; and
WHEREAS, the hermanitas leadership program is a Mana de
Albuquerque program dedicated to fostering leadership and
positive life skills in middle- and high-school-age Latinas;
and
WHEREAS, hermanitas are mentored by Mana members and
others who serve as role models and mentors to a community of
young Latinas preparing for the future; and
WHEREAS, hermanitas serve as role models in their
schools and as leaders addressing issues such as building
positive relationships, dating violence, health and nutrition,
political advocacy, college preparation, cultural sensitivity,
cooperation and collaboration and a variety of other school
and community issues; and

WHEREAS, hermanitas participate in leadership training
by Hispana community leaders and a variety of workshops
addressing college and life preparation; and
WHEREAS, hermanitas participate in mentoring elementary
Latinas in their communities; and
WHEREAS, hermanitas participate each year in the "annual
Hispano roundtable tribute to Hispano legislators" event;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 7,
2006 be declared "Hermanitas Day" at the house of
representatives; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be
transmitted to the president of Mana de Albuquerque.
