AN ACT

MAKING APPROPRIATIONS TO OFFSET INCREASED PUBLIC SAFETY EXPENSES OF VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENTS AND SHERIFFS' DEPARTMENTS; DECLARING AN EMERGENCY.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     Section 1. APPROPRIATIONS.--

          A. The following amounts are appropriated from the general fund to the following agencies in fiscal year 2006 as follows to offset increased public safety expenses because of increased gasoline prices:

                (1) to the state fire marshal, two million dollars ($2,000,000) to be divided among the volunteer and predominently volunteer fire departments; provided that the distribution shall be based on ten percent of each department's current-year distribution from the fire protection fund; and

                (2) to the local government division of the department of finance and administration, one million six hundred fifty thousand dollars ($1,650,000) to be divided equally among all county sheriff offices.

          B. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2006 shall revert to the general fund.

     Section 2. EMERGENCY.--It is necessary for the public peace, health and safety that this act take effect immediately.
