A MEMORIAL
RECOGNIZING SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHERS FOR THEIR SERVICE TO THE STUDENTS AND RESIDENTS OF NEW MEXICO.
WHEREAS, the public education department has established high standards in the social studies disciplines of history, geography, civics and government and economics, and those standards reflect the importance of the study of social studies to the state of New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, the New Mexico council for the social studies and the center for democracy and civic education actively encourage and support excellence in the teaching of social studies; and
WHEREAS, high standards are set in social studies because students' understanding of social studies is essential to their understanding of American democracy; and
WHEREAS, an understanding of social studies disciplines, including history, geography, civics and government and economics, is an important tool in shaping the values of good citizens; and
WHEREAS, social studies teachers have the important responsibility of meeting the high standards set for them in the preparation of students for the benefits and duties that are inherent to American citizenship; and
WHEREAS, the social studies teachers of New Mexico have excelled in meeting that responsibility;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the social studies teachers of New Mexico be recognized for their exemplary service to the students and residents of the state.
