A JOINT MEMORIAL
EXPRESSING NEW MEXICO'S SUPPORT FOR THE HOGBACK BRIDGE PROJECT SAFELY LINKING MAJOR ROADS IN AND NEAR INDIAN COUNTRY AND CROSSING THE SAN JUAN RIVER.
WHEREAS, New Mexico highway 64 and Navajo highway 368 are significant thoroughfares in Indian country and northern New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, no bridge exists over the San Juan river to connect them; and
WHEREAS, thousands of vehicles travel along these routes on a daily basis; and
WHEREAS, the bureau of Indian affairs has committed funds for more than one-half the cost of a project to build a bridge over the river and safely link the two highways; and
WHEREAS, the legislative Indian affairs committee endorses this project as promoting the safety of Native Americans and improving their links with local commerce and industry;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that it support funding of this important project; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that New Mexico's congressional delegation be requested to support the Hogback bridge project; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the president of the United States, the secretary of the federal department of transportation, the president of the Navajo Nation, the Navajo Nation department of transportation, the members of the New Mexico congressional delegation and the San Juan chapter of the Navajo Nation.
