SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Joint Resolution 11 proposes to amend Article 10 Section 2 of the New Mexico constitu-
tion to allow county officers to serve 4 consecutive 4-year terms. Currently, county officers are
allowed to serve two consecutive 4-years terms and then are ineligible to hold any county office
for two years.
The proposed amendment is subject to approval by the voters.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The Secretary of State has estimated the cost of putting a constitutional amendment on the ballot
at $40 thousand.
POSSIBLE QUESTIONS
Will increasing the term limits for county officers assist smaller counties that may struggle to
identify qualified individuals willing to serve as elected officials.
