SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Joint Memorial requests that the New Mexico State Legislature proudly offer its support
and cooperation in seeing that key construction ceremonies, enhanced by the state’s unique cul-
ture, are carried out in the finest naval tradition, and further requests that copies of this memorial
be transmitted to the Governor of New Mexico, the Secretary of veterans’ services, the presi-
dents of Grumman Newport News and General Dynamics Electric Boat and the Secretary of the
Navy.
Significant Issues
According to SJM42, the construction milestones that may be considered include keel-laying,
christening and commissioning ceremonies that may involve New Mexicans. As with the chris-
tening of the World War II vessel, USS New Mexico that was christened by then Federal District
Judge David Chavez and his family, the milestone activities may include representation from
various segments of New Mexico’s citizenry.
