SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Joint Memorial 40 proclaims February 17, 2005 as “New Mexico Mesa Day” at the Leg-

islature.

Significant Issues

MESA is the Math, Engineering, Science Achievement program to prepare minority students for

careers in these subject areas. PED reports in the 2003-04 school year, MESA served approxi-

mately 4,900 students in 101 schools in 31 public school districts. MESA activities include tu-

toring and study skills, college and career counseling, field trips, academic competitions, leader-

ship development, summer programs, scholarship incentives, elementary school outreach,

teacher professional development, parental support and business collaboration.

New Mexico NESA Day will symbolize the importance of the program and recognize its accom-

plishments.
