SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Joint Memorial 29 requests PED to assess the alignment of school districts’ social studies
curricula to the social studies standards over the past five years with emphasis on civics and gov-
ernment.
The PED will also provide a report to address current social studies programs and specific indi-
cators of student learning related to civics and government and provide recommendations for
improvement and possible initiatives to ensure compliance prior to the second session of the 47
th
Legislature.
Significant Issues
The PED reinstated the “Educational Plan for Student Success”(EPSS) process. The PED EPSS
review includes collecting evidence of curriculum alignment in core areas to the adopted stan-
dards. The PED will work with districts to ensure congruence between standards and the deliv-
ered curriculum in the schools.

PERFORMANCE IMPLICATIONS
No impact to the current public school performance measures.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
Senate Joint Memorial 29 does not contain appropriation.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
According to PED, school districts would need to provide documentation of their aligned social
studies curriculum with particular reference to civics and government to the PED.
The PED would need to provide an evaluation system for all districts/schools/charter schools to
collect data that would address the memorial’s issues. To determine pertinent information, stu-
dent data from grades 9-12 or K-12 would need to be gathered and aligned to appropriate items
in the evaluation system.
