Synopsis of Bill

Senate Joint Memorial 27 recognizes the contributions of the Los Alamos National Laboratory

(LANL) to the state of New Mexico and the partnership between the state and the University of

California in operating LANL. It calls upon the United States Department of Energy to enter

into a new contract with the University of California to operate LANL.

Significant Issues

The University of California has managed LANL for 62 years. The current contract expires in

September, 2005 and the Department of Energy has yet to award a new contract.
