SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 1014 appropriates $600 thousand from the general fund to the Human Services De-
partment to support the operation of food banks and to pay for the purchase and distribution of
fresh produce to eight food banks.
Significant Issues
Human Services indicates New Mexico currently ranks eighth in the nation in food insecurity.
The purchase of some fresh produce locally could assist New Mexico’s farmers and those receiv-
ing food bank services. New Mexico Association of Food Banks receives funding and represents
the eight food banks located in Santa Fe, Farmington, Gallup, Clovis, Albuquerque, Roswell, Las
Cruces and Hobbs.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $600 thousand contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general
fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FY06 shall revert to
the general fund.
