SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
SB 302 appropriates $30,000 from the general fund to the PED in FY06 to hold a statewide con-
ference on gangs and drugs for the Gadsden Independent School District in Anthony, New Mex-
ico.
Significant Issues
•
Data from the 2002-2003 Safe Schools Report indicate 133 gang-related criminal acts
were committed in schools.
•
Of the 133 gang-related criminal acts in schools, 23% were reported to law enforcement
authorities.
•
Data from the 2002-2003 Safe Schools Report indicate 2,015 drug-related criminal of-
fenses were committed in schools.
•
Of the 2015 drug-related offenses in schools, 59% were reported to law enforcement
authorities.
•
The PED in conjunction with the DOH sponsor three annual conferences that provide
professional development for school staff in the area of health, including violence pre-
vention, the School Health Education Institute, Health is Elementary, a School Health
Education Institute and the Head-to-Toe School Health Services Conference.
