SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 129 appropriates $6,700,00 from the general fund to the Department of Public Safety
for State Police salary increases. The bill states the Legislative Finance Committee will review
annually State Police salaries relative to other law enforcement agencies in the state, and will
recommend to the legislature salary increases sufficient to maintain the State Police salary rank-
ing within the three highest salary ranges of law enforcement agencies in the state.
PERFORMANCE IMPLICATIONS
DPS reports increased compensation would allow the Department to recruit and retain skilled
officers and not lose them to in-state county and municipal law enforcement agencies. Also, the
attrition of skilled officers has had an effect on department operations.
