SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
House Bill 1005 repeals the entire Organized Crime Act (§§ 29-9-1 through 29-9-17 NMSA
1978), which created the Governor’s organized crime prevention commission and gave it powers
to prevent the infiltration of organized crime in New Mexico.
Significant Issues
The bill will eliminate the seven member commission, which has the power to issue subpoenas,
hire investigators, conduct investigations and hold public hearings in aid of its efforts to combat
the infiltration of organized crime in New Mexico. It is also empowered to assist and evaluate
statewide efforts to combat organized crime, craft plans to improve that effort, and issue an an-
nual report to the governor and the legislature.
The Governor has made no appointments to the organized crime commission.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The organized crime commission does not currently exist so there is no savings or cost attached
to this bill.
