SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
House Bill 927 appropriates $20,000 from the general fund to the Department of Finance and
Administration in FY06 to pay for a deputy sheriff for the magistrate court in San Miguel
County.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $20,000 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund.
Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FY06 would revert to the
general fund.
The appropriation contained in this bill would support the proposed position either on a half-time
basis or for about one-half a year, assuming no benefits were paid. With benefits and other oper-
ating costs, a full-time position would probably require a total $60,000 or more.

ALTERNATIVES
One alternative would be to appropriate funds to the Administrative Office of the Courts to pro-
vide court security (either staff or on contract). This would allow the court to retain greater con-
trol of the position than if an employee is provided to the county sheriff.
