SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
House Education Committee Substitute for House Bill 756 appropriates $75.0 to provide stu-
dents at West Las Vegas high school with knowledge of language variations and the relation-
ships between language, culture and the community.
Significant Issues
New Mexico has been a leader in the nation in providing resources to serve the needs of students
with a home language other than English. Since 1973, the Bilingual Multicultural Education Act
has provided financial support for Bilingual Education programs in New Mexico’s public
schools.
For the 2004-2005 academic school year, there are 60 districts with 460 schools implementing
Bilingual Education programs. A total of 57,965 students are participating in the program. West
Las Vegas Public Schools currently has nine schools implementing approved state Bilingual
Education programs and serves 1,772 students.
