SUMMARY
Synopsis of SEC to House Bill 668
The Senate Education Committee Amendment adds home school students to those eligible to
participate in extracurricular activities and amends Section 22-8-18 NMSA 1978 (Program Cost
Calculation—Local School Board Responsibility) to add a factor of .1 for those charter and
home school students participating in extracurricular activities to the calculation of program
costs of the school district.
Synopsis of Original Bill
House Bill 668 adds a new section to the Charter Schools Act allowing charter school students to
participate in district extracurricular activities, including intramural and intermural sports, if they
meet the other eligibility requirements. The student shall participate at the school in the atten-
dance zone in which the child lives.
Significant Issues
PED assess under current New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) guidelines, charter
schools must join NMAA and compete against schools of similar size. Many charters have not
