SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
House Bill 352 appropriates $150,000 from the general fund to Cultural Affairs Department in
FY06 to provide technical assistance for the Mission Convento and Bond House Museums in
Espanola.
Significant Issues
According to DCA, both the Mission Convento and the Bond House Museum are in need of mu-
seum professional technical assistance in order to improve their internal environments and secu-
rity. This work on the museums will result in better care for their collections, as well as position
the Bond House and Convento to host exhibits from other museums in New Mexico and the na-
tion. DCA indicates that, specifically, museum specialists are needed to outline the scope of
work, begin to upgrade to professional museum standards both facilities to provide for a safe and
secure museum environment for collections and exhibitions. The museums need assessment of
climate, including HVAC and humidity; evaluation of lighting in exhibition galleries; assessment
of fire extinguishing capabilities in public, exhibition and storage areas; evaluation of pest man-
agement; and gallery preparation for exhibitions.
