A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO IMPROVE THE LOAD CAPACITY OF THE RIO GRANDE BRIDGE ON STATE HIGHWAY 51 IN SIERRA COUNTY.

     WHEREAS, the Rio Grande bridge on state highway 51 was built in 1940; and

     WHEREAS, the weight limit has been lowered due to deterioration of the bridge supports and an increase in the dead load since its construction; and

     WHEREAS, the reduced weight limits are affecting local businesses and the local economy; and

     WHEREAS, the state bridge management unit of the department of transportation has listed the bridge for repairs and perhaps reconstruction;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the department of transportation be requested to expedite repairs to the Rio Grande bridge on state highway 51 and to make an evaluation for long-term reconstruction to accommodate the local economy and transportation needs; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of transportation.
