A MEMORIAL
PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 3, 2005 AS "UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO DAY".
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico, the flagship of higher education in the state since 1889, has offered New Mexicans access to high-quality education, research and public service programs while serving as a significant knowledge resource for the state, the nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, each year, the main and branch campuses of the university of New Mexico educate over thirty thousand students and award associate's, bachelor's, master's, doctoral and professional degrees to over four thousand students; and
WHEREAS, the graduates of the university of New Mexico join the ranks of more than one hundred fifteen thousand university of New Mexico alumni throughout the world, sixty-six thousand of whom have chosen to remain in New Mexico to live, work and contribute to the economy; and
WHEREAS, the research conducted by the university of New Mexico consistently contributes new knowledge and advances the understanding of the people and cultures of the world while enhancing the quality of life for New Mexicans and promoting economic development; and
WHEREAS, the teaching, research and clinical care provided by the health sciences center of the university has served the immediate health care needs of a majority of New Mexicans;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 3, 2005 be proclaimed as "University of New Mexico Day" in the house of representatives; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the governor and the board of regents of the university of New Mexico.
