AN ACT

RELATING TO EDUCATION; MANDATING THE TEACHING OF LABOR HISTORY IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     Section 1. A new section of Chapter 22, Article 13 NMSA 1978 is enacted to read:

     "[NEW MATERIAL] LABOR HISTORY REQUIRED.--American history and government courses at the elementary, middle school and high school level shall include instruction in the history of organized labor and its role in the economy and community."

     Section 2. A new section of Chapter 22, Article 13 NMSA 1978 is enacted to read:

     "[NEW MATERIAL] INCLUSION OF DISCUSSION OF APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS REQUIRED.--High school counselors shall include discussions of approved apprentice training programs recognized by the New Mexico apprenticeship council and bureau of apprenticeship of the United States department of labor among options available to high school students when discussing post-graduation alternatives. In addition, representatives of apprenticeship programs shall be invited to participate in high school career fairs to which representatives of colleges and the military are invited."
