AN ACT
MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO THE PUBLIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT FOR TRIBAL LITERACY PROGRAMS.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--Five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the public education department for expenditure in fiscal year 2006 for new literacy programs on six tribal sites that integrate in-school, after-school and summer school literacy programs for children in grades kindergarten through eight. The department shall contract with a nonprofit sponsorship organization that has more than fifty years of experience working with Native American children, that is already working in New Mexico on the type of integrated tribal literacy program described in this section and that is willing to match state funds with five hundred fifty thousand dollars ($550,000) for the literacy program. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2006 shall revert to the general fund.
