SUMMARY

     Synopsis of SIAC Amendment

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee Amendment adds language which requests the interim Legislative Indian Affairs Committee also investigate ways for local communities in northwest New Mexico to prevent and treat alcohol abuse.

     Synopsis of the Original Bill

Senate Joint Memorial 68 requests the interim Legislative Corrections Oversight and Justice Committee to investigate ways for local communities in northwest New Mexico, specifically Gallup and other communities in McKinley county, to prevent and treat alcohol abuse, including designating Gallup as a local empowerment district.

The Memorial further requests that copies of the memorial be transmitted to the interim Legislative Corrections Oversight and Justice Committee, the interim Legislative Indian Affairs Committee and the Mayor of Gallup.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

The two committees referenced currently do not exist.  If they are established as interim committees, they will be staffed by the Legislative Council.  The Council believes they can staff the committee within current resources.
